Scott T. Donald, AIA

With more than 25 years with PFA Architects, Scott has planned and delivered several of the firm’s largest and most complex projects. Scott has lived all over the world as the child of a military family settling in Asheville in 1990. He became partner in 1998 focusing on educational, commercial, and institutional facilities most recently serving as Partner in charge of AB Tech’s Ferguson Center for Allied Health and Workforce Development. With his thorough understanding of project management and construction administration, Scott is adept at navigating complex projects with clear communication and promoting cooperation between the owner, contractor, and design team. Professional collaboration, exceptional project delivery and a sense of humor are the standard in Scott’s work.

Scott holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Louisiana Tech University and NCARB Certification. In his free time you can find him camping, hiking, or raising rescued shelter dogs.

Maggie V. Carnevale, AIA, LEED AP

Maggie V. Carnevale, AIA, LEED AP

A native of Charleston, SC, Maggie moved to Asheville in 1998 when she joined PFA Architects as an intern architect. She became partner in 2009 focusing on relevant, well informed design for both public and private clients. With an emphasis on sustainable design, Maggie has played a critical role in many of the firm’s most challenging projects. She specializes in education and commercial projects throughout WNC including Mars Hill University and Haywood County and is well versed in all aspects of planning, programming, and design, particularly in developing design schemes where challenging site issues and multiple user groups are involved. Maggie uses her managerial expertise to engage these groups in order to resolve conflicting priorities and formulate a unique design strategy.

Maggie holds a BA in Design from Clemson and Master of Architecture from the University of Arizona. She is a LEED accredited professional and served on the WNC Green Building Council and Asheville Chapter of the AIA. Maggie enjoys travelling, biking, running, and spending time with her family of three + puppy.

Cynthia Turner, AIA, LEED AP

Cynthia Turner, AIA, LEED AP

Before joining PFA Architects in 2012, Cynthia practiced architecture in Asheville for 14 years with seven years at Architecture Design Studio. Her experience includes numerous public projects and government buildings involving cooperation with various state agencies, the NC University System, and regional municipalities thought WNC. Cynthia has worked on a wide array of complex renovations, adaptive reuse, and historic preservation projects which rely on her extensive knowledge and understanding of complex building codes. She has experience in all phases of design and construction with an emphasis on the owner’s needs with regard to budget and schedule.

Cynthia grew up in Burlington, NC and graduated from NC State with a Master of Architecture. She has lived in Asheville for over 30 years and spends free time playing guitar, camping, and hiking with her husband, Ed.

Laura Berner Hudson, AIA, LEED AP

Laura Berner Hudson, AIA, LEED AP

After spending over 15 years on the west coast, Laura moved back home to Asheville and joined PFA Architects at the beginning of 2014. Her work experience encompasses a broad range of building types with a focus on educational, civic, and commercial architecture. She has worked on a variety of large, complex projects over the last 10 years working for an award winning architecture firm in Los Angeles. Since joining PFA Laura has served as Project Architect and Project Designer for several of the firm’s most challenging projects for Mars Hill University and Madison County Schools. Her passion for design emerges from the belief that architecture can impact people’s everyday lives by working with clients to create solutions that are contextual, functional, sustainable, and beautiful with an interest in new technology and building systems.

Laura received her undergraduate degree in Religious Studies from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona. She is currently a member of Asheville’s Planning and Zoning Commission. Laura spend her free time with her husband and daughter when not working on her house, one room at a time.

Chip Howell, AIA, LEED AP

Chip Howell, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB

A native of Asheville, Chip joined PFA Architects in 2015 after moving back from California where he worked for 7 years at award-winning commercial and residential design-build firms. Chip has a wide range of experience in all phases of design and construction detailing which is further reinforced by 2 years working as a carpenter before graduate school. With an emphasis on community development and sustainable design, Chip has developed strong working relationships with local non-profits and municipal partners. While at Mathews Architecture he led design efforts to enhance the public amenities at Carrier Park and was an integral team member in the master planning for the AB Tech Campus and River Arts District.

Chip received his undergraduate degrees in Historic Preservation & Community Planning and Art History from the College of Charleston and a Master of Architecture from UNC Charlotte. He is currently a board member with Green Opportunities and principal member of the Asheville Design Center’s Designbuild Studio taskforce. When not in the office Chip enjoys hiking, camping, and the occasional mission to find some east coast surf.

Mike Hatter

Following ten years of architectural experience in southern California, Mike joined PFA Architects in June of 2016.  Working across all phases of project development—from Programming to Construction Administration—Mike has a broad base of project management experience comprising a wide range of project types, delivery methods, and programs.  Project experience includes work in Education, Hospitality, Multi-family, Office, and Military Facilities, inclusive of a number of LEED certified projects.  As a foundation for his project management and client service skills, Mike brings to his project work a prior ten year career in consumer marketing and quantitative analysis, working for and providing consulting services to companies including The Coca-Cola Company, R.J.R. Nabisco, Procter and Gamble, and The Clorox Company.  Mike’s experience in the Education sector also includes five plus years as adjunct faculty at the Design Institute of San Diego, an accredited four-year design college.

Maggie Allen

As a recent graduate, Maggie brings excitement and enthusiasm for design and the profession as well as skills in BIM software. She is currently pursuing her architecture license. Maggie has a strong interest in how good design can impact people’s lives. She is a flexible team player and has a variety of responsibilities including construction documents, 3-D modeling, and rendering.

Originally from Greenville South Carolina, Maggie received her BA in Architecture from Clemson University and her Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University. Outside of the office, Maggie can usually be found rock climbing and trail running in nearby Pisgah Forest.

Erin Martin

Erin is PFA’s Interior Designer and brings specialized expertise to the office as well as knowledge of BIM software and graphics. She loves working with clients to bring their ideas into reality and creating spaces that benefit the people that will use them. Her hope is to one day integrate green and biophilic design into every project she collaborates on.

She recently graduated from Appalachian State with a bachelor of science in Interior Design and is working to get both her NCIDQ and LEED Green Associate certifications. When she is not at work she can be found cooking, working on art projects, or hiking.

John Sunday

John Sunday

John has worked in the design and construction industry since 1989 and joined PFA Architects in 2002. He has been involved in all phases of design documentation, but his eye for detail and ability to solve challenging constructability problems has made him one of PFA Architect’s most valuable team members. John often works “behind the scenes” assisting architects and designers in evaluating design details to ensure practical solutions in response to complex structural requirements. He strives to stay current on building technology and new materials in an industry that is constantly evolving.

Born and raised in Las Vegas, John moved to Asheville in 2001 after attending the University of Arkansas. He is both a pop culture enthusiast and animal shelter volunteer when not heading for the beach.

Chris Roberts

Chris Roberts

With 20 years of experience in architectural drafting, Chris joined PFA Architects in 2012 as a production team member where he is responsible for detailing, documentation, and IT management. He has extensive knowledge of working drawings and Autocad/BIM management. Chris is skilled in architectural detailing, coordinating consultant drawings, and review shop drawings during construction. In addition to architectural support, Chris serves as our in-house IT manager in charge of the office computer systems and network administration.

Chris is a native of Western North Carolina and received his BA in History from Mars Hill University. He also holds an AAS degree in Architectural Technology from Catawba Valley Community College. Chris serves as president of the Society for the Historical Preservation of the 26th NC Regiment as well as the Friends of the Zebulon Vane Birthplace.

Renee Walker

Renee Walker

Renee is a Buncombe County native who joint PFA Architects in 2000 as a bookkeeper. After going back to school and completing a degree in Business Administration, Renee advanced to the role of Office Administrator and is responsible for all the finances as well as the day-to-day administration of the firm. Renee’s extremely organized and thorough approach to office management makes her invaluable to the partners, clients, and consultants alike as she track projects from implementation to completion to ensure proper accountability.

Renee received a Bachelor of Business Administration from Montreat College. She spends her free time with her husband, 3 children, and 5 grandchildren and can often be found swimming, hiking, boating or fishing.
